A Beginner's Guide to Journal Emphera

Image
What Is Junk Journal Emphera?      Emphera, by it's simplest definition, is things that are made to be used once. Junk journal emphera, then, is anything you can add to your journal. Journal emphera is usually items like material paper, post cards, stickers, beads, ribbon, receipts, stamps, and so on. Emphera adds a personal decorative touch to your journal, and I've found the most interesting emphera usually isn't the expensive nice kind you find in a craft store. I personally believe too many people stress over buying nice emphera, which can put a hole in your wallet and make the experience significantly less personal. So without further ado, t his is Sharky's guide to gathering interesting emphera for your personal use in your journals! How Do I Get Emphera?     First off, don't worry about the fancy expensive stuff you may see being posted online or for sale. That's a later thing you can get if you really want it, but if you're new to junk journaling, I ...

How To: D.I.Y. Photobooth Strips!

Image
How To Make Photobooth Strips       Have you seen those cute journal entries on Pinterest with photobooth-esque images decorating spreads? This is pretty simple to achieve with a printer and paper. I'll be using a Kodak Step for this process, as the photos print automatically on sticker paper and there's an in-app collage feature that makes the process a lot simpler. If you are not using a Kodak step, I suggest either Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, or Canva as it's easier to make images scaled to a certain inch in these programs. In this blog post, I'll help guide you through how to make photobooth strips at home to decorate your journal entries with, featuring both word descriptions and images! This is a really simple but cute way to make putting photos in your journal or scrapbook more fun! What you'll need: A printer Glue/tape if not sticker paper Scissors Construction or printer paper A ruler Step One: Collage Your Images and Print     If using a Kodak Ste...

Types of Journals

Diary/Daily Journal     A diary is the most common, well-known form of personal journaling. The word typically has a feminine and childish connotation, but a diary is not gender or age specific. Anyone can keep a diary. Some (like me) prefer to call their diaries simply "journals" or "daily journals", the terminology is a matter of preference, they're essentially the same thing with a different name. Similar to how the  Squalidae family is often referred to as either dogfish, spiny dog fish, or dog sharks depending on where you live! Commonplace Book       A form of journaling I see rising in popularity in recent years is commonplace Books, but a lot of confusion often arises with the term. While rising in popularity, they still aren't as well-known as a diary, research journal, junk journal, etc. are. For starters, you keep a commonplace book on you at all times, so they're usually small in size. Think an A6 or a pocket . Like any personal writing, how...

Sharky's Weekly Spread Ideas #1

Image
Can't think of what to write, or only have two pages left in your journal and you fear a full entry will need more than that? I find myself with this issue fairly often myself, and I'm here to help you!  ദ്ദി(˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ✧ There's a wide array of spread inspo you can find on Pinterest, but sometimes doomscrolling becomes too all consuming, so I find it's often easier to make a list and work based on that! Here's the first weekly Sharky's list of spread ideas, part one (all with example images)! 1. Bingo This idea is very simple! You decorate your page and create a bucket list of things to do within a specific time frame. I like to do seasonal, so Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter! You can do one every season, or put all four at the start or end of a journal together! 2. Junk Spread This one is really simple, and requires nothing but junk you have! It doesn't have to be pretty either, just make sure not to put anything that may harb...

I Am an Ebay Goblin (and You Should Be, Too!)

Image
Ebay is an underrated treasure trove of cheap journal supplies. Every now and then I find myself as I eat my bowl of cereal scrolling through the listings of the "journal destash" (or "scrapbook destash") search tag on the wonderful world of Ebay. I used to sort by price lowest to highest, but now I prefer to search by newest listing, hoping to find a good deal before someone else snatches it away from me. It can be a difficult battle, as listings are constantly going up, some being way more reasonable than others. Some are obvious attempts to make money off of an item they bought for half of that. The same is true for Depop, which I mostly avoid nowadays due to Aliexpress/Temu resellers flocking to in droves to see who can make the next penny off of unsuspecting users. Every now and then there's a deal worth buying, but in the age of AI and Temu, that's become more and more rare on most all reselling platforms. I do have a $60 destash lot from someone ...

How Do I Start Journaling?

Image
A question I often get asked when discussing the topic of journaling is: "how do I start?" The simplest answer is: pen and paper. Of course, that's a very unsatisfying answer that leaves much to be desired. Usually, people moreso mean "what do I write about?" or "how do I decorate it?" in the event that they are referring to junk journaling- or modern scrapbooking- art journaling, or other decorative formats that have become more popularized online since the COVID-19 pandemic. And that, my friend, is what this blog is here to assist you with! I started journaling when I was eight- such is now lost to time- and began to journal consistently in early 2020 in my freshman year of high school. It was a frantic time (title drop), and I found it comforting to have an outlet to discuss all of the craziness going on without fear of judgement or without worrying about being so negative all the time when talking to other people. I hope journaling can help yo...
